Restriction: Facial Blur is not available for LivingLens Experience Edition. Contact your Medallia Representative for more information.

Medallia LivingLens provides customers the ability to select video and image files for software-powered blurring in the LivingLens platform.

  • Facial Blur detects and blurs faces within video and image files.

  • Full Blur distorts a video or image’s full screen.

It is not possible to select and blur a specific part of the media screen.

Facial Blur detects faces within video and image files. The software tracks the detected faces within a video file to blur each face from all angles. The rest of the video or image file renders normally.

The software most easily detects and tracks unobstructed front-facing faces. This view provides the best results for facial blurring. It is more challenging to detect and track the following:

  • Faces shown from a side angle

  • Face that represent a small proportion of the screen

  • Pixelated faces

  • Faces in small resolution/poor quality media

Media with Facial Blur applied can be reprocessed with Full Blur.

Full Blur will distort the whole video or image file. The main use case for Full Blur is when Facial Blur is unable to detect and blur all faces in a media file.

It is not possible to revert a Full Blur to a Facial Blur.

Facial Blur and Full Blur are typically used to meet personally identifiable information (PII) or reporting requirements or when customers are unable to secure respondent permission to use their media.

Best practice is to source respondent permission to use media in advance of upload.

Creating blurred media

Role required: Customer Admin, Channel Admin, or Pro. See User roles.

Note: Facial Blur must be activated on a LivingLens channel in order to use this feature. Customer Admins can activate Facial Blur on any channel, see Channel management - Configuration tab.

If your account does not have a Customer Admin, contact LivingLens Support via Medallia Knowledge Center to activate this feature.

Facial blurring is available on a per video/image basis with the ability to multi-select relevant media. Selecting media for blurring is a manual process. It is not possible to automate the selection process.

Tip: The blur selector opens over the media displayed in the Media Library. Before clicking Select Media, filter to a subset of media, such as by Media Source, Country or Language, to apply blur to that subset.

To select and blur media:

1. On the Media Library screen, click Select Media.

2. Select the blur type from the drop down menu: Facial Blur or Full Blur.

3. Navigate through media and select each media item for blurring. Selected media has a checkmark.

Note: Selecting media will not begin blur processing. Media will not blur until you click Blur.

4. Click Blur to start blurring the selected media.

5. Depending on the type of blurring, review the Facial Blur Confirmation or Full Blur Confirmation modal.

a. Click Confirm to process blurring.

b. Click Cancel to return to blur selection.

Each media thumbnail image will display Processing Media... until blurring is complete.

To use Blur All:

1. On the Media Library screen, click Select Media.

2. Select the blur type from the drop down menu: Facial Blur or Full Blur.

3. Click Blur All. This will select all video and image files.

4. Depending on the type of blurring, review the Facial Blur Confirmation or Full Blur Confirmation modal.

a. Click Confirm to process blurring.

b. Click Cancel to return to blur selection.

Each media thumbnail image will display Processing Media... until blurring is complete.

Filter blurred media

Blurring media creates a Standard filter for each item in LivingLens. Use the Blurred Status filter to view Facial, Full, or Not Blurred media in the Media Library.

Using blurred media

Once media is blurred, Pro users will see a blur (eye) icon on a Media Library thumbnail’s lower left corner. They can view the unblurred version of the media by clicking the eye icon beneath the media player or image and download both the blurred and original video or image file from the download menu.

Standard users can only view the blurred version of media.

There is no automatic process for reverting a blurred video or image to the original as the default view for all users. However, a Pro user can download an unblurred version of the media and re-upload it to the channel.

Blur and Showreels

Blur media prior to creating a clip or showreel. Each clip in a showreel has the level of blurring (Facial or Full) that has been applied in advance of making the clip.

Note: Showreels and clips cannot be processed for blurring. Full video and image files must be blurred in advance of making a clip for the showreel.

Blur and Analytics

Facial Blur and Full Blur do not impact Facial Emotion Analysis and Object Recognition. These analyses take place as part of media ingest, before media is available for blurring in a channel.
